VALORANT Windows Cannot Access the Device, Path or File Fix

“Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file” means Windows cannot find the VALORANT/Riot Client target or a security/permission policy stopped it. Record the exact path, then check the shortcut, file existence, Windows Security history and user access. Do not grant Everyone Full Control or disable antivirus.

Identify the blocked target

1. Capture the error and exact path.
2. Open shortcut Properties > Shortcut > Target. If the target no longer exists, stop using that shortcut.
3. Launch from Start or the official Riot Client, not a copied EXE or old backup folder.
4. If the file exists, verify Properties > Digital Signatures. Do not add permission, exclusion or Unblock until path and publisher are trusted.

If an update moved or removed the target, this is a stale shortcut—not a reason to rewrite folder permissions. Create a new shortcut from the working official client.

Was a downloaded file blocked?

Windows can attach Mark of the Web/Zone.Identifier to internet downloads. Microsoft says to verify the source and file before Unblock. This can apply to a newly downloaded official Riot installer; it is not a reason to unblock the entire installed game folder.

1. Download the installer only from Riot's official site.
2. Open file Properties and look for Unblock.
3. If source and publisher are verified, apply it only to that installer.
4. Never use wildcard or bulk PowerShell commands to unblock a directory.

Check Windows Security

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and look for a matching Riot/VALORANT block. For a quarantined file, verify full path, publisher and detection name. Allow only a file proven to come from the official Riot installation.

Microsoft warns that Defender exclusions remove real-time scanning and can expose the device. Never exclude the system drive, game drive or Downloads, and do not turn protection off. If a false positive is verified, use the narrow app allowance documented by the security vendor.

Controlled Folder Access

If the notification explicitly identifies a verified Riot executable, note its path, check its signature and official install location, then allow only that executable through Manage ransomware protection > Allow an app through Controlled folder access. Do not disable the feature globally or assume a different EXE is Riot.

Inspect NTFS permissions safely

In Properties > Security, confirm your account or Users group has Read & execute. Normal installs inherit access from the parent. If you see an explicit Deny, unknown owner or organization policy, do not recursively take ownership or rewrite ACLs.

• No Everyone: Full Control: it lets other users and processes alter game files.
• No bulk Program Files changes: they can break Windows security and other apps.
• No permanent Run as administrator: it can hide the real shortcut/install problem and raises privilege unnecessarily.

On a managed work/school PC, contact the administrator rather than bypassing policy.

Repair order

1. Restart Windows to close Riot processes.
2. Use the official Riot Client from Start instead of the stale shortcut.
3. Use Riot Client Repair if available. Windows may show Repair/Change under Installed apps or Programs and Features; Microsoft notes not every desktop program supports it.
4. If updating stalls, follow the VALORANT update guide.
5. If repair is unavailable or fails, keep screenshots and use Riot's official uninstall/reinstall path. Avoid registry cleaners and unknown uninstallers.

When to inspect Windows itself

If multiple trusted apps show the same error, Windows components or the user profile become stronger suspects. Check Windows Update. DISM/SFC should follow Microsoft's official sequence only when broader corruption exists, not as the first fix for one stale Riot shortcut.
