Riot Games does not publish a current, worldwide counter combining VALORANT downloads or unique installations across every platform. An exact claim that a certain number of people downloaded the game therefore cannot be verified. The frequently repeated 1.7 million and 14 million figures are not download totals.

Was 1.7 million the download count?

No. Riot's April 8, 2020 Closed Beta update says Twitch peaked at more than 1.7 million concurrent viewers. It does not say 1.7 million people downloaded, logged into or received access to the game. Riot also explained that server slots were limited and only a percentage of eligible accounts received a Closed Beta entitlement.

“VALORANT was downloaded 1.7 million times on day one” and “1.7 million players logged in” both mislabel the official source. The recorded metric was an approximate peak of simultaneous Twitch viewers.

Does 14 million mean downloads?

No. Riot Games' 2021 Social Impact Report states that VALORANT reached 14 million monthly players worldwide in 2021. Monthly players are not downloads or unique installations. One player can reinstall, use multiple devices or platforms, while someone who downloads the game may not remain active.

Accounts, active players, downloads, installs and concurrent users are therefore not interchangeable. See how many people play VALORANT for the limits of current population figures.

Why is there no single PC and console number?

VALORANT is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Riot's official platform page confirms the platforms, free-to-play access, cross-progression and cross-inventory. It does not provide a combined download total.

PC uses Riot Client, while consoles use their own store and device ecosystems. Re-downloads, updates, reinstalls and several devices linked to one account make raw downloads different from unique players. Any useful number must include its date, platform scope and exact metric.

Checklist for evaluating a claim

  • Source: Riot, a platform store or a third-party estimator?
  • Metric: download, install, registered account, MAU, DAU, concurrent player or Twitch viewer?
  • Date: Closed Beta, PC launch, console launch or current period?
  • Scope: one region/platform or a worldwide combined figure?

Use the official VALORANT download guide to install safely and the VALORANT storage guide to plan disk space. For lobby size, see how many players are in a VALORANT match.

Short answer

VALORANT's verified current lifetime download total is not public. The 1.7 million figure was a Twitch concurrent-viewer peak during the 2020 Closed Beta; 14 million was a monthly-player metric from 2021. Neither is a download or unique-install total.
