How Many Players Is VALORANT? 5v5 and Mode Differences
Standard VALORANT matches are 5v5 with 10 players total. Learn solo queue, premade teams, 13-round wins and why alternative modes can differ.
Standard VALORANT Unrated and Competitive matches are 5v5, with 10 players across two teams. You can queue alone: matchmaking fills the open team slots. A five-player premade is not required. Limited-time, alternative and custom modes can use different team or total player counts.
Why is a standard match 5v5?
Riot Games' official beginner guide describes a team of five. Each player locks one Agent, and a team cannot duplicate the same Agent. A fixed role composition is not mandatory, but splitting smoke, entry, info and site-hold duties helps the squad coordinate.
In the standard Spike format, one team attacks and the other defends, then sides swap after 12 rounds. The normal win condition is first to 13. A 12-12 Competitive game can enter overtime and draw votes. Calling every match “24 rounds long” is therefore incomplete: it can end earlier or extend beyond regulation.
Solo queue or premade?
5v5 does not mean you must bring five friends. Matchmaking places a solo player into a team. You can also search with a duo, trio or another eligible premade, but Competitive party eligibility depends on rank gaps and Riot's current queue rules. If a party member is ineligible, the client warning shows the rule being applied.
A five-stack can agree on roles and calls before queueing. In solo queue, short pings, voice or text calls such as “rotate,” “eco,” “save” and ultimate status help the team act on the same plan.
Does every VALORANT mode have 10 players?
No. Ten players is the answer for standard Unrated and Competitive, not a universal rule. Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, Swiftplay, Spike Rush, custom games and rotating modes can have their own player and team rules. Check the mode card in the client because queue formats can change with patches.
For a current example, Riot's Patch 13.00 notes define Retake as a 3v3 mode where the first team to five rounds wins. That is why “the standard core modes are 5v5” is more accurate than “VALORANT is always 5v5.”
Separate match size from population
- How many players is VALORANT? For lobby size, standard play is two teams of five.
- How many people play VALORANT? This asks about global active population; Riot has no public live counter.
- How many downloaded VALORANT? This asks about installs; Riot has no public combined total.
Read how many people play VALORANT and how many downloaded VALORANT for those metrics. See the match-length guide and rank, RR and MMR guide for Competitive context.
Short answer
Unrated and Competitive are 5v5 with 10 players total. You can solo queue and let matchmaking complete the team. Alternative and limited modes can use different player counts, so check the current mode card.
