VALORANT Patch Problems: Update Error Troubleshooting

Troubleshoot VALORANT patch downloads, frozen progress, Update Failed errors, Riot Client, storage, network, firewall, and support logs.

First identify the symptom: the patch will not start, its percentage is static, Update Failed appears, or VALORANT will not launch after updating. Reinstalling is not the first step. Check Riot service status, fully restart the client, then verify storage and connection.

Check Riot service status

If many players report update or login trouble, check Riot Games Service Status before changing local files. Maintenance or a regional incident cannot be fixed by repeatedly restarting the download.

Fully restart Riot Client

  1. Close VALORANT and Riot Client.
  2. Exit Riot from the Windows notification area.
  3. Wait for Riot/VALORANT processes to close in Task Manager.
  4. Restart the PC and open the client normally.

Permanent administrator compatibility mode is not a universal fix; Riot’s current support guidance even asks users to disable it for some file-access errors.

Separate download from disk work

A static percentage can mean the client is unpacking, verifying, or writing data. Watch Riot Client network and disk activity. If disk activity continues, do not keep terminating it. Use the stuck at zero, stuck at 45, or stuck at 90 guide for that stage.

Network and storage

  • Disable VPN/proxy and test Ethernet where possible.
  • Restart the router and synchronize Windows time.
  • Leave headroom on both the game and system drives for temporary unpacking.
  • Check official firewall exceptions for Riot Client, VALORANT, and Vanguard; do not permanently disable protection.

Update Failed or post-patch launch issue

Record the exact code. VAN codes belong to the Vanguard flow, while patch messages belong to Riot Client. Do not delete random cache folders, install registry/DNS packs, or remove Vanguard for every error. A clean reinstall is a last step.

Collect support logs

Riot Repair Tool currently collects diagnostic logs and creates a ZIP for a support ticket; it is not a one-click game-file repair button. Attach the ZIP with screenshots, time, region, and attempted steps. See the general updating screen guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a static percentage mean the download stopped?
Not always. The client may be unpacking, verifying, or writing; check network and disk activity first.
Should I reinstall immediately?
No. Check service status, restart the full client, connection, free space, and firewall before reinstalling.
Does Riot Repair Tool automatically repair VALORANT?
Its documented purpose is to collect diagnostic logs and create a ZIP for Riot Support.
