How to Play Astra in VALORANT: Current Guide

Master Astra's Astral Form, five Stars, Gravity Well, Nova Pulse, Nebula and Cosmic Divide for attack, defense and retakes.

Astra is a VALORANT Controller who places Stars across the map and turns them into smokes, a pull, or a concuss. Strong Astra play means preparing for the team plan, spending as little time as possible unarmed in Astral Form, and choosing whether each Star should become Nebula, Gravity Well, or Nova Pulse at the moment of contact.

What is Astra's role?

Astra cuts sightlines, controls chokes, and supports map tempo from range. Spending every Star on damage combos leaves the team without smokes; using all of them only as smokes wastes her global control. Compare her with a more direct Controller in our Brimstone guide.

Astral Form and Stars

Enter Astral Form to view the map from above and place Stars. Astra cannot use her normal view or gun while inside, so get to cover first. Buy-phase Stars arm shortly after the barriers drop. Patch 9.05 restored Astra's maximum from four to five Stars. Every Star is a shared resource that can later become Nova Pulse, Gravity Well, or Nebula.

Dissipate: recall and fake a smoke

Recalling a placed Star returns it after a delay and briefly creates a fake Nebula at that location. The fake does not last like a full smoke; use it for a quick cross, to turn a crosshair, or to save a Star after a rotation call. Buy-phase recall refunds the charge immediately. Recalling carelessly can leave the Star unavailable at the real contact timing.

How to use Astra's abilities

Nebula: smoke on contact

Nebula transforms a Star into a spherical smoke. On attack, block the main defender sightline as the team reaches the choke—not so early that it fades before the execute. On defense, wait for flash, drone, or hit audio instead of keeping a smoke open by default. Patch 11.08 set Nebula's cooldown to 35 seconds, and sequential smoke timing should be part of the round plan.

Gravity Well: pull and apply Fragile

Gravity Well pulls players toward its centre, then applies Fragile to anyone still caught when it ends. Fragile increases incoming damage, making the pull strong with molly, grenade, or team spray. It can disrupt teammates too, so call before activating it in front of your entry. Patch 11.08 set Fragile to 2.5 seconds and the cooldown to 60 seconds. In post-plant, it can delay a defuse, but opponents may bait the activation.

Nova Pulse: tie the concuss to a swing

Nova Pulse charges briefly, then concusses players in the area. Predict where the enemy will be when it lands; firing at an old position is easy to dodge. It can affect allies, so call the stun. Patch 11.08 set the concuss duration to 2.5 seconds and the cooldown to 60 seconds. Its best value comes when a teammate swings with the detonation.

Cosmic Divide: block bullets and audio, not players

Cosmic Divide connects two chosen points with a map-wide wall. It blocks bullets and heavily dampens audio across it, but players and many abilities can cross. Use it to split a retake, cover a plant from a long sightline, or break a crossfire. Agree which side the team owns, because the audio cut changes your own calls and trades too.

Astra on attack

  1. Confirm the site and choke before placing the full setup.
  2. Reserve enough Stars for the required smokes.
  3. Open Nebula as the entry arrives; place the pull or stun on the defender's hold or escape route.
  4. Stay alive for post-plant smoke, pull, or recall pressure.

Astra on defense and retake

Stars on both sites create global pressure, but opponents can see them and bait an activation. Wait for execute audio before committing a long cooldown. Recall unused Stars when the hit changes sites. On retake, split vision with Nebula, concuss the held angle, and use Cosmic Divide only when teammates are ready. Economy and composition

Five Stars give flexibility, but buying unnecessary remote setups hurts the round budget. On a low buy, support one clear win condition with a smoke and one meaningful combo. Astra pairs well with area damage and fast Duelist swings. Compare Controller needs in our agent selection guide.

Common mistakes

  • Entering Astral Form in the open.
  • Hard-placing all five Stars at round start.
  • Smoking before the team reaches the choke.
  • Pulling or stunning your own entry.
  • Assuming Cosmic Divide stops players and every ability.
  • Spending all Stars on combos while smoke duty remains.

Astra rewards decision order: learn the plan, protect smoke resources, time the combo with contact, and exit Astral Form quickly. For cosmetics and VP, visit the VALORANT page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Stars does Astra currently have?
Patch 9.05 increased Astra's maximum back to five Stars. Each Star can become Nova Pulse, Gravity Well, or Nebula.
Can Astra recall a Star?
Yes. Dissipate recalls it for reuse after a delay and briefly creates a fake Nebula at its location.
Does Cosmic Divide stop players?
No. Players and many abilities can cross it; the wall blocks bullets and heavily dampens audio.
What are Gravity Well and Nova Pulse's current cooldowns?
Since Patch 11.08, both have a 60-second cooldown, so repeated use of the same function needs deliberate planning.
