A whisper in VALORANT is a private text message visible only to the Riot friend you select. It is not proximity voice chat or a low-volume voice setting. The most reliable method is to open the Social/Friends panel in VALORANT or Riot Client and start a direct conversation.
Send a whisper
- Open the Social or Friends panel.
- Find the friend you want to contact.
- Right-click their name or open their profile card.
- Select Send Message and type in the private conversation.
- Before sending, confirm that the recipient name is shown.
The label can vary with client language and UI version. What matters is that a single Riot friend, not Team, Party, or All, is selected.
Whisper during a match
Open text chat and switch its recipient to the private conversation. Shortcuts can behave differently with UI focus and personal keybinds, so trust the visible recipient label. See the VALORANT chat commands and chat key guide for channel differences.
Reply safely
Click the private-message notification or conversation tab and answer in the same window. Some client versions may offer a shortcut to the latest whisper, but always verify the conversation header first so a private message does not go to team or all chat.
If whispers do not work
- Check that the recipient is still in your Riot friends list and online.
- Check blocks, chat restrictions, and connection problems.
- Restart VALORANT and Riot Client.
- Send one message from Riot Client's social panel, then retry in game.
- If needed, form a party together or remove and re-add the friend; Riot listed these as workarounds in Patch 12.00.
