How the VALORANT Ranked System Works

Learn how VALORANT ranked uses RR, hidden MMR and match results, why gains vary, and what actually helps you climb consistently.

The VALORANT ranked system combines the badge and Rank Rating (RR) you can see with a hidden matchmaking rating (MMR). Winning is the main driver of RR gains, while a loss usually costs RR. Your gains are not fixed because the system also compares your visible rank with its estimate of your skill.

VALORANT rank order

From lowest to highest, the ranks are Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant, Immortal and Radiant. Most ranks below Radiant have tiers 1, 2 and 3. Rank is your visible badge, RR shows progress inside it, and MMR is the hidden estimate used for matchmaking.

Why do RR gains and losses vary?

Riot says match outcome is the major RR component. Round margin and individual performance can add context, with personal performance historically having more influence at lower ranks. There is no official fixed formula that turns a kill count into a set amount of RR.

  • If your MMR is above your rank, wins may give more RR and losses may cost less.
  • If both are close, gains and losses tend to look more balanced.
  • If MMR trails your rank, gains can shrink until consistent wins close the gap.

The old claim that rank is calculated from only your last five matches is false. Recent form can matter, but ranked is not a five-game average.

Placements, Act Rank and climbing

Placements help establish a visible rank at a competitive start; Act Rank is a separate record of performance during that Act. Exact placement and reset rules may change, so check the current Competitive screen.

To climb, play for round wins instead of frag chasing. Keep a focused agent pool, make short comms, coordinate utility and review first deaths, wasted utility and thrown advantages. A regular duo setup can improve comms. Use the entry guide for role timing and the map settings guide for map awareness.

Can patches change ranked?

Yes. Patch 13.00 adjusted RR calculations so consistently winning players felt less stuck after earlier MMR changes had settled. PC matchmaking was also tuned to keep team average ranks within one sub-tier more often. Treat old exact formulas as historical, not permanent rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does VALORANT ranked only use the last five matches?
No. It combines visible rank, RR, hidden MMR, match outcome and other performance signals; there is no simple five-match average.
Why do players at the same rank gain different RR?
Their hidden MMR, visible-rank relationship and match signals differ, so the RR result can differ too.
Does top frag guarantee more RR?
No. Winning is the main component. Individual performance may contribute, but Riot publishes no fixed kills-to-RR formula.
