Short answer: a VALORANT duo is two players joining the same party and queueing together; it is not a separate Duo mode. The pair selects Unrated, Competitive or another supported queue, and the match keeps that mode’s normal team size and rules.

How to duo queue

Add the player by Riot ID and tag, then send a party invite from the lobby.
Choose a queue both accounts, platforms and shards are eligible to enter.
Ready up and start matchmaking. If the button is disabled, read the exact lobby eligibility message.

Account level, rank gap, queue restrictions, PC-versus-console separation, maintenance or penalties can block a party. Client messaging for the current patch is more reliable than an old static rank chart.

Competitive duo rules

A two-player premade can enter Competitive only within the rank range the matchmaker permits. Patch 5.0 moved the solo/duo/5-stack structure to Immortal 1+, while Patch 7.06 required Ascendant+ players to invite Platinum or higher. Five-stacks follow separate wide-rank and RR-adjustment rules.

Do not apply 5-stack exceptions to a duo. Check current RR details in the VALORANT rank-system guide.

How a strong duo plays

Trade spacing: stay close enough to refrag without stacking the exact same angle.
Utility chain: sequence flash, smoke, recon, stun or molly instead of dumping both kits together.
Complementary roles: build around map and comp; avoid the rigid “fragger plus support” label.
Short comms: share position, damage, utility and Spike info with the whole team, not only party voice.

Does duo mean free RR?

No. Familiar comms can reduce mistakes, but duo queue does not guarantee easier lobbies, extra RR or wins. Riot’s current matchmaking also tries to keep team average ranks closer and can consider premade size.

Playing normally on your own accounts is allowed. Account sharing, purchased accounts, intentional deranking, boosting and win-trading violate competitive integrity.
