VALORANT Spike Defuse Time: 7 Seconds and Half Defuse

A full VALORANT Spike defuse takes 7 seconds, half takes 3.5, and detonation takes 45. Learn tap, stick, fake, Wingman and retake timing.

Short answer: a continuous full Spike defuse takes 7 seconds in standard VALORANT. At 3.5 seconds, the half-defuse checkpoint is saved; after letting go, the same Defender or a teammate needs only the remaining half. A planted Spike has a 45-second detonation timer.

Full defuse, half and detonation

  • Full defuse: 7 uninterrupted seconds when no half is saved.
  • Half defuse: the first 3.5 seconds permanently fill the first segment; the remaining segment takes about 3.5 seconds.
  • Detonation: 45 seconds after the plant completes. With no half, the theoretical final start is 7 seconds before detonation, but pathing, input and latency make a zero-margin attempt unsafe.

Player count, plant spot and Defender Agent do not automatically change these base times. Standard VALORANT also has no purchasable CS-style defuse kit.

Tap, stick, play for half and fake

  • Tap: briefly start the sound to force the attacker to swing.
  • Stick: hold the use key and commit through pressure.
  • Play for half: secure the 3.5-second checkpoint, fight, then finish the second segment.
  • Fake: start and release to disrupt the attacker's timing. Be ready for the swing instead of assuming they must peek.

After a tap, keep your crosshair ready at likely head height; see the VALORANT crosshair guide.

Practical retake timing

  1. Separate travel, site clear and defuse time.
  2. Leave more than 7 seconds without half, or more than 3.5 after half.
  3. Add time for smokes, walls, mollies and clearing lineup positions.
  4. While one player defuses, teammates cover likely swings and post-plant utility paths instead of stacking one angle.
  5. If the round is mathematically lost, decide whether to save; use practiced audio-visual phases and context, not a vague beep guess.

Round structure is covered in how long a VALORANT round takes; first contact and trade spacing are in the VALORANT entry guide.

Do abilities change defuse time?

Normal utility does not apply a universal multiplier to the seven-second channel. Smokes and walls provide cover; mollies, shocks, displacement and enemy pressure can force the defuser off. They change whether a defuse is possible, not its base channel length.

Gekko's Wingman can plant or defuse while the team keeps guns up. Wingman must reach the objective and can be stopped by enemy utility. Riot documented targeting changes in Patch 6.05 and clearer Spike/defuse audio plus progress-bar fixes in Patch 6.08.

Half-defuse comms

Once half is genuinely saved, another Defender can finish it, so “half” is a critical playable comm. A false call ruins the next player's time calculation; confirm the checkpoint and changed tone before calling it. For clutch-chat discipline, see the VALORANT NT guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to defuse the Spike in VALORANT?
A continuous full defuse takes 7 seconds in the standard Spike mode. After 3.5 seconds the half-defuse checkpoint is saved, leaving roughly 3.5 seconds to finish.
How long after planting does the Spike explode?
The standard planted Spike detonates after 45 seconds. With no half saved, you theoretically need to begin an uninterrupted defuse by the final 7 seconds, but input and movement delay make zero margin unsafe.
Can another player finish a half defuse?
Yes. Once the first 3.5-second checkpoint is secured, the same Defender or a teammate can complete the remaining half.
Do abilities make the Spike defuse faster?
Standard Agent abilities do not shorten the base 7-second channel. Utility can cover, deny or interrupt the defuser; Gekko's Wingman can perform the objective while following its rules.
